According to our bylaws, after six years of continuous service, an elder must roll off the board for a period of one year. (The only exception is the lead pastor who does not roll off the board, but does take a sabbatical once every seven years.)
Ron is close to finishing up his year off from being a board member. However, he didn’t stop serving our church during that time. Ron continued as a volunteer staff member as the Director of Hospitality and Connection, and he also continued leading his community group which he has been doing for about twelve years now. Bravo, Ron!
The current plan is for him to rejoin the board in time for the April elder meeting. He will serve as a replacement for Bartow MacDonald, who just finished his stint as an elder/board member for six years as well. Thank you, Bartow, for serving our church so faithfully for many years in a row!
You may ask, why are you sharing this with us, Mario? Good question. It is our tradition at Good News, whenever we choose someone to serve on the board, to announce it to the congregation through the church newsletter. After that, we typically wait about one month. This time period gives the congregation a chance to voice any concerns or character issues that they believe haven’t been dealt with and/or that they believe we aren’t aware of, so that we can factor those concerns in before finalizing anything.
Therefore, I am making this announcement now – well ahead of the April meeting. If nothing is revealed to disqualify him, the plan is for Ron to begin his new term then.
A few of you may have further questions like, “What does it even mean to serve as an elder on the governing board of Good News?” Questions like that are covered in an earlier article that we published back in 2019 when we nominated Ron the first time. Feel free to check it out and see if it answers any questions or concerns that you may have.
