There is something within us that longs for the extraordinary. Many of
us don’t want to live “normal” lives, but want to accomplish true greatness. A
good example of this is this common anecdote:
“Sir Ernest Shackleton when he was about to set out on one of his expeditions, printed a statement in the papers, to this effect: ‘Men wanted for hazardous journey to the South Pole. Small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger. Safe return doubtful. Honor and recognition in case of success.’ In speaking of it afterward he said that so overwhelming was the response to his appeal that it seemed as though all the men of Great Britain were determined to accompany him.”
Now, I’m not sure that story happened exactly that way in real life, but
you get the point. Some people are drawn to adventure and difficulty. I get
that. But here is one of my concerns. I wonder if there are some of you out
there, who are not yet currently serving God and yet you are waiting for an ad
like this to come to your attention. In your mind, you aren’t serving God
right now, but you would be willing to do something really extraordinary for
Him, if the opportunity arose.
Well, guess what? I’ve got an opportunity for you. Volunteer in ToddlerZone at Good News Church.
Over the past year and a half, we’ve had a lot of growth in KidZone. When Latara (Director of KidZone) first arrived here, attendance in KidZone was often between 60 – 70. Now, we are averaging about 110 – 130 kids every week! So, obviously, we need a lot more kids ministry leaders than we had back in 2017.
You might say, “Wait. That’s not the opportunity I’ve been waiting for. I’m waiting to do something extraordinary for God! I want to do something really important.”
First of all, ToddlerZone is important. Toddlers are more high-maintenance than most other age groups, and it’s good to care for them – especially when you consider that some of these kids belong to parents who otherwise wouldn’t get a break in order to listen to some Bible teaching uninterrupted. So, you would be ministering to those parents as well.
Secondly, I think it’s good to point out that while some of you are waiting for the huge thing to come along, you are doing almost nothing in the meantime. Why not help out with the obvious ministry that is right in front of you - even if you consider it to be a small thing? After all, people usually aren’t entrusted with greater things until they’ve proven faithful in smaller things (see Luke 16:10).
Now, you may say, “Ugh, but Mario, I just can’t do toddlers.” But for some of you, what you actually mean is: “It would be difficult.” Meanwhile you wait for the difficult expedition God might call you to one day. What I’m saying is: What if today is that day and you are missing it?
I do realize that some of you actually shouldn’t work with children. I get that. Perhaps some of you already know that you wouldn’t be able to get past our background check because of things in your past, and therefore you need to serve God in some other way. Great idea. We love you, and are glad to have you. Please do find a way where you can serve God.

Maybe it isn’t. But until He does, would you be willing to serve your church in this particular way? Because we need your ordinary help now.
